Georgian government expects country’s progress to be recognised at NATO summit

Preparatory work for the NATO Summit planned to be held on 11-12 Jul, in Brussels was discussed at the Security Council meeting last night.
"Our goal is for Georgia’s progress on the way to membership to be properly recognised at the summit. We have discussed several options as to what kind of recognition we need in order to become more closer to NATO, to our final goal,” PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili said after the meeting.
As the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili said, the country has made progress and this needs to be recognised.
"26th of May gives us a very important platform before the summit to express our joint position - high level delegations will be visiting Georgia and this gives us an interesting platform for work,” President Margvelashvili said.
The other topics discussed at the Security Council meeting included threats coming from the Russian Federation and its influence on the country’s security and defense, the increase of US and other partners’ support, as well as reforms in Georgia’s defense policy.
The US Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Aaron Wess Mitchell stated at a NATO-Georgia public diplomacy forum in Tbilisi today that the US President Donald Trump supports the 2008 NATO Bucharest declaration and appeals to alliance member states to adhere to the obligations taken within the declaration.
Georgian approval for membership in the EU is at 75 percent and in NATO at 65 percent. However, Georgians are mixed about the country’s direction, NDI says.
The Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell and Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili have discussed bilateral relations at a meeting held at the US Department of State today.
