2017 data: Unemployment rate in Georgia slightly declines to 13.9%

In 2017 the annual unemployment rate in Georgia declined by 0.1 percentage points and equalled 13.9 percent, shows the employment and unemployment annual data of 2017 of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Last year, the economically active population constituted 65.8 percent of the working population (population of 15 years and older).

The employment level has been reduced by 1.5 percentage points in Georgia’s urban areas, while in rural areas it has been reduced by 0.8 percentage points.

Traditionally, the majority of people who work in Georgia were self-employed and in 2017 nothing has changed in this regard”, said Geostat.

In 2017, the share of self-employed people to the total number of employed people was 51.7 percent, which is a 1.5 percentage points decline compared to 2016.

The unemployment rate is higher amongst men than in women. The rate was 2.3 percentage points higher in men last year than in women. In the same period, the unemployment rate in women increased by 1.5 percentage points and in men it decreased by 2.8 percentage points.

In terms of age category, in 2017 the unemployment rate reached the highest level in the age group of 20-24 years (29.6 percent), which is a 3.2 percentage point decrease year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is the lowest in the 65+ age category in Georgia.
