After a four-year pause the mixed Georgian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission for economic cooperation has resumed its work.

The ninth session of the Commission is taking place in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev today.

Energy cooperation between Georgia and Ukraine is in focus at the session, which was opened by Georgian Vice Prime Minister, Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.

Kaladze said that Georgia and Ukraine have many mutual interests in the field of energy and both countries actively work for developing a mechanism to ensure alternative energy sources and create new transport routes in the region.

"This deepens the existing energy cooperation between our countries”, Kaladze said.

He named tourism as another important field of cooperation between the two nations. He noted that the number of Ukrainian tourists to Georgia increases every year with Ukraine ranking fifth among the countries from where the highest number of visitors arrived in Georgia last year.

Kaladze said that Georgia and Ukraine share mutual foreign aspirations too – they both are working hard to get closer to the EU.

The ninth session will also discuss cooperation in agriculture, infrastructural and transport projects, educational, healthcare and cultural programs.

Both sides agree that Georgia and Ukraine have the potential to deepen their economic cooperation.
