Georgian judoka wins Dusseldorf Grand Prix

A Georgian judoka has won the top award at a prestigious international judo competition in Germany.

Vazha Margvelashvili defeated Japan’s Norihito Isoda in the men’s 66kg class final at the Judo Grand Prix Dusseldorf 2017.

The judo event is taking place from February 24- 26. 

Another Georgian, Amiran Papinashvili lost the final fight against a Mongolian athlete in the men’s 60kg division and took home silver. 

Later today the competition will feature two more Georgians – Lasha Shavdatuashvili and Ambako Avaliani.

Shavdatuashvili was an Olympic gold winner in the under 66kg weight category in 2012 and took bronze in the under 73kg division in Rio in 2016. Avaliani is a 2011 World Cup winner.
