Inspectors will be patrolling underground passages across the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to ensure safety and order.

Levan Jgarkava, head of the Tbilservice Group, a company responsible for waste management, street lighting and underground walkways maintenance in Tbilisi, announced the news today.

He said that underground patrols will later be replaced by surveillance cameras but until the process of installing cameras begins, special inspectors will be in charge.

He also said that a major plan has been developed to install surveillance cameras not only in all underground passages, but in all recreational squares and parks in Tbilisi. A special unit will be set up within the Interior Ministry to handle camera records.

There is a total of 55 underground walkways in Tbilisi. Mayor-elect Kakha Kaladze visited one of them earlier this week and expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the darkness and bad smell. He gave 10 days to the company responsible for the matter to develop a strategy to better manage underground passages.
