One of Tbilisi’s long-time problems - darkened and dirty underground passages – is being given a makeover to soon become clean, illuminated and safe.
Real Estate-Tbilisi, the company in charge of maintaining Tbilisi underground passages, has begun renovation works in 25 underground passages across the capital city.
During the first and current stage of works surveying of the passageways was taking place to determine which parts of the passages (walls, ceilings, stairs and lamps) needed repair.
Once all restoring works was completed, all underground passages will be illuminated.
Additionally, sign posts will be installed above each underground walkway and cameras inside the tunnels will be better protected and fitted into metal boxes.
In March 2015 Real Estate-Tbilisi, under guidance of Tbilisi City Hall, was authorised to be responsible for the upkeep of the Tbilisi underground walkways.
Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania said one million GEL had been earmarked from this year’s capital city budget to improve the quality and safety of the underground passages in Tbilisi.
