The Spanish Foreign Ministry has released a statement to clarify that no representative office of Georgia’s Russian-occupied region of Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) has opened in Barcelona.

"Spain, like the other member states of the European Union, considers South Ossetia an integral part of Georgia. South Ossetia is not recognised by practically any member state of the United Nations. It is ultimately a de-facto entity, which according to international law does not have the so-called right of legation in any country of the European Union, nor in almost any of the states that are part of the international community”, the statement read.

It added that Spain reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

Earlier this week, reports spread in the media that Tskhinvali region had opened its representation in Barcelona.

Official Tbilisi announced this information was false and Spain would never let the de-facto leadership of the occupied region open a diplomatic office on Spanish territory since the country recognises Georgia’s territorial integrity.
