Third place for Georgia at Cadet World Judo Championships

Georgia’s youth judo team ended third at the Cadet World Judo Championships 2017 after claiming five medals at the tournament hosted in Chile’s capital Santiago.

The result for Georgia came at the competition that for the first time featured mixed teams of both boys and girls.

The Georgian cadets overcame Germany 4-3 in the match for the third place and bronze medal among teams, after they lost out to eventual champions Russia in the semifinal.

Before the semifinal round Georgia defeated Japan in the quarterfinals in one of the tournament’s most closely matched fixtures.

With score tied at 4:4, the Georgian team were named winners based on additional points score of 32:25, progressing to face their German counterparts.

Georgia was among 18 national teams in the sporting event, while over 420 athletes participated in the individual categories.

The roster of the country’s athletes at the tournament involved five boys and three girls, who claimed one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in both team and individual disciplines.

These included gold medal for 73kg category athlete Lasha Bekauri as well as silver for Sopio Somkhishvili (70kg) and Luka Kapanadze (55kg) in addition to a bronze for Mariam Tchanturia (73kg).

The Cadet World Judo Championships came to a close in Santiago on Sunday.
