Georgian national women’s chess team finished among prize-winners at the World Team Championships hosted in Russia by claiming third place and bronze medals on Monday.
The five competitors of the Georgian team played nine matches over the tournament, defeating the United States on the final competition day with a final score 3-1.
The result saw Georgia achieve 12 points at the championship hosted in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, with the team finishing ahead of joint points-scorers India and Ukraine with match points.

Local favourites Russia celebrated the champion’s title with 16 points accumulated over the competition.
Organised by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), the World Team Championships featured 10 women’s teams including hosts Russia as well as China and Vietnam.

Held for the sixth time among women’s national teams, the event included former world champions as well as title holders from continental tournaments. Georgia celebrated winning the competition in 2015.
The championships launched on June 16, with the winning teams awarded on June 26.
