Georgia’s capital Tbilisi is welcoming the first Georgia-Korea Information Access Centre that's been specially designed for people of all abilities.

The Centre officially opened today at the Mirza Gelovani Youth Library in Georgia’s capital. The space was completely rehabilitated and equipped with the most modern technologies so people with disabilities can easily access and use the internet.

The Mirza Gelovani Youth Library was selected ahead of other libraries because of its large size and good location on Vazha-Pshavela Ave, in Saburtalo district.

People who are blind or have vision impairments will be able to have free access to information [in this Centre]. This is the first information centre which is equipped with the latest technologies, including a braille keyboard and more,” said Georgia’s Economy Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who opened the new Centre today.

At the new facility. Georgian and Korean high officials took part in a yellow ribbon cutting ceremony. A yellow ribbon is used for various symbolic purposes; in this case it was used to show support for people who are blind or have visual impairments.

When addressing the audience, the Georgian Minister promised "many other similar information centres” would open in different parts of the country in the future.

The Georgia-Korea Information Access Centre was opened in Tbilisi through a Memorandum of Cooperation between Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency and Korea's National Information Society Agency, which was signed in May.

Within the deal Korea allocated $224,463 to modernise the Mirza Gelovani Youth Library to make it ready for the new Georgia-Korea Information Access Centre.

The Centre aimed to increase internet accessibility in Tbilisi and raise digital literacy in the country.
