Special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) detained four foreign citizens today for allegedly importing drugs into Georgian territory and possession of large quantities of narcotics.
Two citizens of Brazil, a citizen of Ecuador and a person from South Africa were detained at Tbilisi International Airport earlier today as they allegedly attempted to smuggle a large amount of drugs into Georgia, claimed the Ministry.
Police seized 196 packages from the four travellers, which experts claim contained a total of 2.228kg of cocaine.
The Ministry stressed that through joint efforts of different units of the MIA and other state bodies, five other foreign citizens had been detained in recent months for allegedly importing more than 12kg of cocaine into Georgia.
All the operations were conducted by specialist drug trafficking officers which are part of the division of the fight against organised crime of the Central Criminal Police Department alonagainst the Customs Department of the Ministry of Finance.
