Georgian police have uncovered and seized a massive drug haul worth about $2.5 million USD from three foreign citizens who attempted to smuggle drugs into Georgia.
Three Bulgarian citizens were taken into custody after they attempted to smuggle more than 8kg of drugs, predominantly cocaine, across the Georgia-Armenia border.
Police officers of Georgia's Samtskhe-Javakheti region made the significant drug bust at the Ninotsminda/Bavra Border Crossing Point between Georgia and Armenia. As a result of their investigation, Bulgarian citizens Sasho T, Georg A and Rusi K were arrested as they attempted to transport illegal drugs through Georgia.
The investigation revealed the three Bulgarian citizens tried to enter Georgia while each concealing 10 packages of large quantities of drugs strapped to their bodies by adhesive tape.
The officers seized 8.5kg of drugs from the three men, of which about 6.3kg was cocaine. Initial estimations noted the drugs would have a street value of $2.5 million USD. Charges are expected to be laid against the men under Article 262 of the Criminal Code of Georgia for illegally trafficking drugs.
