Two people have been detained for attempting to smuggle more than 500 diamonds into Georgia.
Today the Investigation Agency of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance announced it had detained two people for illicit trafficking of diamonds.
The Investigation Agency seized 557 diamonds off the two people.
The seizure operation was carried out two days ago and was supported by the Customs Department of Georgia’s Revenue Office.
The Finance Ministry did no specify whether the detained duo were Georgian citizens; the Ministry only said the pair were caught when attempting to cross the border and enter Georgia on November 23.
The two people allegedly stashed the diamonds in special hiding places inside their clothing in an attempt to smuggle the diamonds across the border.
If found guilty the two people will face eight to 11 years behind bars.
