The Georgian national Judo team are making their global presence noted and cementing their status as the best in the continent after winning the Judo European Championship for the third time in a row.
At the Judo Championship held in Montpellier, France, the Georgian team defeated Russian judokas in the final phase of the competition and gained the title of the best European team.
As for individual meets, Georgia gained two gold and two silver medals. The best European fighters in their weight are Avtandil Chrikihsvili (81kg) and Valeri Liparteliani (90kg). The silver was won by Amiran Papinahsvili (60kg) on the very first day of the Championship and another silver was won by Adam Okruashvili (+100kg).
After the Championship ended, the European Judo Federation named the Best of the Best 2013. Three nominations - best team, best coach and best junior judoka - were won by Georgians.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibahsvili issued his written statement earlier today congratulating the winners and thanking Coach Irakli Uznadze for having "such a good team.”
