The Georgian national judo team made an impressive start at the Judo Grand Prix and won four medals, including a gold.
Today the Georgian male judo team gained first place in the prestigious competition at Tournament Sport Palace in Tbilisi.
The champion of today’s competition in the 73kg category was Nugzar Tatalashvili, who challenged and won against 2012 Olympic Champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili with an impressive judo move, named waza-ari.
The move is awarded after an opponent is thrown with control and accuracy, or held on their back for 20-25 seconds. It is the second highest score a fighter can achieve and once it is awarded by the referee, the match ends in that fighter’s favour.
Today’s gold medal was the fourth medal the Georgian judo team has won at the international event. Fighters Ushangi Margiani and Zebeda Rekhviashvili gained bronze medals today and Lukhum Chkhvimiani also placed third yesterday.
Later today Georgian fighter Avtanchil Chrikishvili will fight for a gold medal in his category.
The Judo Grand Prix is one of the largest judo events on the international judo calendar.
The 2014 event opened in Tbilisi yesterday and will last until March 23.
