Georgian residents receive $285.39mln in remittances in December, 45.11% from EU

Remittances to Georgia from abroad hit $285.39 million in December, with the figure including $128.76 million sent from European Union member countries, the National Bank said on Wednesday.

Transfers from EU states constituted 45.11 percent of the total volume, increasing by 3.95 percent in the past month. Recipients also received $25.6 million, or 8.2 percent, less from senders throughout the world than in December 2023.

Among countries of the bloc, remittances from Italy topped the amounts with $50.94 million (+1.38 percent y/y), followed by Greece with $23.89 million (+3.93 percent) and Germany with $23.47 million (+6.74 percent).

The highest amount of remittances from other countries came from the United States ($55.32mln), Russia ($31.25mln) and Israel ($23.27mln).

Overall, 96 percent of the total money transfers from abroad originated in 24 countries, with the volume of transfers from them each exceeding $1 million in December.

In the same month, remittances leaving Georgia totalled $34.8 million, compared to $32.3 million in December 2023.
