Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of Georgian media outlets Netgazeti and Batumelebi, was on Monday charged with assault on a police officer during a rally in the city of Batumi, western Georgia, last week.

Amaglobeli’s lawyer Juba Katamadze told the press his client was exercising her right to remain silent, adding the defence's position would be presented at an upcoming court hearing.

Amaglobeli was initially detained under administrative law during a rally outside the main police department of Batumi against the Government’s decision last year not to include European Union accession talks on its agenda until 2028.

She was released shortly after her detention but was re-arrested soon after.
