The United States admires the love of freedom and independence of the Georgian people, the US Embassy in Georgia said on Sunday in its statement commemorating the soldiers and civilians who died in Georgia during the Soviet invasion 103 years ago.
On Georgia's path to Europe, the US is by your [the country’s] side”, the Embassy noted in its social media post.
On this day in 1921, Georgia lost its independence and was occupied by the Red Army, which took over Tbilisi, overthrew the government and subsequently annexed the country.
