Irrigation improvements in Kvemo Kartli to ensure “quality harvest” for 11 villages - Agriculture Ministry

Georgia’s Agriculture Ministry on Thursday said improvements to the irrigation system covering 4,075 hectares of land in Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities in the central-southern part of the country would improve water supply to 11 villages.
The body added the project would “significantly increase quality harvest” for the villages of Tsurtavi, Parizi, Kizilajlo, Tamarisi, Tsereteli, Sabirkendi, Algeti, Tazakendi, Azizkendi, Algetis Mevenakheoba and Keshalo.
The surrounding area of the city of Marneuli and businesses will also benefit from the restored irrigation system”, the Ministry said.
The project is financed by ₾4.4 million ($1.66mln), with the works expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Tamaz Mghebrishvili, the General Director of Georgian Amelioration, inspected the works on the irrigation network earlier today together with Giorgi Dokhturishvili, the State Representative in Kvemo Kartli, and other officials of the local government.
The Ministry said seven infrastructure renovation projects were currently underway in Kvemo Kartli to ensure regular irrigation of 1,885 hectares of agricultural land in the locality.
Georgian Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili and Lesley Bearman Lahm, the Asian Development Bank Country Director for Georgia on Friday signed a $48 million loan agreement for modernising the irrigation systems for agriculture in the country and supporting institutional reforms.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Agriculture Minister Otar Shamugia on Thursday reviewed projects in the sector for this year, from the budget of the Preferential Agrocredit Programme to financing for irrigation infrastructure and promotion of the country’s produce.
Steps to be implemented within the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation and Land Project were discussed in a meeting between the Georgian Agriculture Minister Otar Shamuagia and Rolande Pryce, the Regional Director of the World Bank in the South Caucasus, in Tbilisi on Monday, the Ministry said.
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development will allocate €46.2 million for enabling development of sustainable agriculture, irrigation and land market in Georgia, the Ministry of Finance of Georgia announced on Monday.
Otar Shamugia, the Georgian Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, on Monday discussed ongoing projects and cooperation with Rolande Pryce, the World Bank Regional Director in the South Caucasus.
