Georgian author Aka Morchiladze nominated for Nobel Prize in Literature

Georgian author Aka Morchiladze has been nominated as a candidate for the next Nobel Prize in Literature, the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature said on Friday.

The Institution said Morchiladze’s nomination had been sent to the Nobel Committee for Literature at the Swedish Academy, responsible for selecting laureates for the prize.

It added the writer was chosen by the majority of votes from representatives of the Scientific Council of the Institution and Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Humanities.

Morchiladze, born Giorgi Akhvlediani, is recognised as one of the prominent authors of contemporary Georgian fiction.

He has published over 20 novels and short story collections since his celebrated 1992 work Journey to Karabakh.

Morchiladze’s work on the Georgian literary scene has been recognised with awards including the Saba Literary Prize for Novel of the Year in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2012.
