Roberta Metsola, the European Parliament President, on Thursday claimed the European Union would “not abandon the Georgian people”, amid ongoing protests in the country against the Government decision last month not to include EU accession talks in its agenda until 2028 and its response to the demonstrations.
In comments after Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili’s address to the body over current developments in her country, Metsola claimed the bloc’s position on Georgia’s EU path “remains strong despite concerns over October general elections”.
We made a promise to the people who see Europe as their home, and we will not abandon them. This includes the Georgian population, who are still on the streets today with EU flags”, she said.
The official urged citizens of the country to “stay committed to their European aspirations”, claiming the EU's support “remains unwavering”.
