Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday claimed the “radical wing” of the domestic opposition was “fearful” of the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump, the new United States President, which is set for January 20.

Speaking at a Government session amid ongoing protests against his office’s decision last month to postpone the country’s European Union accession talks until 2028, Kobakhidze suggested opposition leaders were “anxious about the date” and the potential impact it could have on their “efforts to challenge the Government”.

One of their leaders said they have time to change the Government until January 20. These people are very scared of this date, but I want to promise them that they will have to end their attempt to bring some chaos to our country much sooner”, the PM pledged.

Kobakhidze further added that while the opposition was “concerned” about the date, his Government was “optimistic” about it.
