Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday condemned an opposition rally held in capital Tbilisi the previous day to protest the results of last month’s general elections, calling it a “display of falsehoods, submission, and disorder”.
Reflecting on his earlier pre-election remarks in western Georgia earlier this year, Papuashvili accused the opposition of trying to “present war as peace, false narratives as truth, and betrayal as patriotism in the name of Europe”.
The rally, held in central Tbilisi, saw participants denounce the October 26 elections as “rigged”. The event also included a delegation of European parliamentarians who urged the Georgian public to “fight against the stolen elections” and advocate for the country’s European future.
However, ruling Georgian Dream party officials criticised the European lawmakers, labelling them as “politically biased” and accusing them of “sowing chaos in the name of the European Union”.
