Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Tuesday welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ongoing visit to Tbilisi, which he stressed had reaffirmed the country’s “strong commitment” to supporting Georgia's aspirations for European integration.
In his comments, Darchiashvili highlighted Hungary’s role as a "very close strategic partner”, pointing to “dynamic bilateral relations” between the two nations.
"We cooperate in many sectors”, the FM stressed, noting the significance of the visit of Orbán's delegation, which includes ministers of foreign affairs, economy and finance.
The visit was of special importance in many ways”, the official claimed, adding the sides “discussed the future perspectives of our cooperation in various directions, and our common desire is to make these bilateral relations even more dynamic and effective”.
“Also, [Hungary] now chairs the Council of the European Union”, Darchiashvili said, calling the position “crucial” for Georgia’s EU integration efforts.
Hungary has always been a very strong supporter of ours when it comes to our European integration”, he added.
Citing a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó, Darchiashvili claimed he had received assurances that Hungary would maintain its backing for Georgia’s European aspirations. "The more friends we have in this regard, the better”, he said.
The Hungarian delegation completed its visit, which came two days after Georgia’s general elections, on Tuesday.
