Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is on an official visit to Georgia, on Tuesday congratulated his counterpart Irakli Kobakhidze on the victory of the ruling Georgian Dream party in Saturday’s parliamentary elections and said the outcome of the vote was “indisputable”.

In his remarks at a joint press briefing with Irakli Kobakhidze, Orbán noted “positive” relations between the two countries.

I want to congratulate the Prime Minister of Georgia on his victory in the elections. I have been observing the debates that take place after the announcement of the election outcome, I have also read the international responses, and I can say that no one has dared to say that these elections or their results were not democratic in any way”, the Hungarian PM said.

“Relations between the two countries are mutually beneficial and positive. We don't know why it happens, maybe history is the reason. You are a people fighting for freedom, we are people of the same nature. There are big states around us, a state with great power, and we are always fighting for sovereignty and freedom”, he continued.

He further reviewed the report of Hungarian observers on the elections in Georgia by saying it was “positive in all aspects”.

I studied the report presented by the Hungarian observers - it was positive in all aspects, free and democratic elections were discussed in this report, and therefore I want to congratulate the Prime Minister of Georgia”, Orbán continued.

He further stressed a “free and democratic” nature of the elections before noting criticisms regarding them.

[T]here will still be disputes and arguments in Europe - you should not take it seriously. This is a common story - there are arguments of this kind in Brussels. When inherently conservative parties win, we always see this kind of argument. If the liberals win, then there is democracy, if the conservatives win, then there is no democracy”, the visiting official claimed.

Orbán wished his Georgian counterpart “much success” and told him  “you can always count on our strategic partnership in the future”.
