Davit Narmania, the Head of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday addressed the economic forum Georgian Energy Policy, Energy Security and Renewable Energy, highlighting the ongoing reforms in the domestic sector and the tariff policy.

Speaking at the event focusing on the country's energy policy, energy security, and renewable energy issues, Narmania underscored the efficacy of the policy of optimising renewable energy and stressed the importance of transitioning from net metering to net billing system.

Just as in many European countries, Georgia must transition from a net metering system to a net billing system, specifically moving from offsetting kilowatt-hours supplied to and taken from the grid to offsetting the cost of electricity supplied to the grid against the cost of electricity consumed”, he said.

The Commission Head noted the process required a multi-year transition period to ensure the current users of the net metering system are not affected, adding it was “important that the new system remains attractive to consumers”. He noted the Commission received the recommendation for the transformation of the net metering policy from the Energy Community.

Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili, who attended the forum, also emphasised the role of the sector in the country’s development, stating that energy policy served as the “foundation” for both the Government’s economic policy and its security.
