Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Friday said expansion of the Austrian logistics company Gebrüder Weiss with the opening of a new terminal at its logistics centre in Tbilisi signified the country’s “gradual transformation into a truly global transport and logistics hub”.

This logistics centre is a Class A facility operating at a very high international standard. It will handle local supply chains as well as international transit operations. This investment aligns with our transport and logistics policy as Georgia is becoming a global transport and logistics hub. The company’s decision to make additional investments in Georgia is based on the potential they see in our international transport routes, including the Middle Corridor”, Davitashvili said.

The Minister underscored the Government’s commitment to leveraging the country’s transport and logistics potential, citing “significant progress” in recent years and the role of these sectors in driving economic growth.

Davitashvili also highlighted the increase in cargo flow as a result of the Government’s “consistent policies”, noting a 3.7 percent rise in the amount of cargo transported by the domestic transport sector in international transportation from January to August compared to the same period in 2023.

He also emphasised the Government’s “substantial” investments in infrastructure modernisation, including the completion of the East-West highway, the construction of the Anaklia deep sea port project - earmarked to be built in Georgia’s Black Sea town to ensure increased logistical capability between Asia and Europe - and plans for the construction of a new international airport in Tbilisi.

Wolfram Senger-Weiss, the CEO of Gebrüder Weiss, said while it initially had “not [been] easy” to start business in Georgia, the company had “placed trust in the country and its Government”, adding the move had “paid off”.

Our business is developing successfully, and the business environment is simply excellent. Therefore, we made the decision about the next step of expansion easy. The business environment is important not only for our company, but also for the development of various businesses in Georgia”, he said.

The company CEO noted the economic situation in the country was “positive”. He also said Georgia's geopolitical location was “noteworthy” with businesses given access to various markets from the South Caucasus to Central Asia.

That is why we located our business in Georgia. These are the circumstances that led us to make the first investment in the country and further expansion, which absolutely paid off”, he added.

Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG is a global full-service logistics company headquartered in Austria and with a history spanning over 500 years. Since establishing its logistics terminal in Georgia in 2012, the company has expanded and developed its operations, culminating in the recent completion of the third expansion of the existing logistics centre.

The company's investments in Georgia have totalled over €30 million, with €12 million dedicated to European investments in 2024.
