Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday highlighted his Government's dedication to global peace and security and reiterated Tbilisi’s support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia in his address at the United Nations Security Council session in New York.

Speaking at a debate initiated by Slovenia, the Georgian top official highlighted the country’s “longstanding contributions” to NATO- and European Union-led missions, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he said 32 Georgian servicemembers had been “killed in the pursuit of peace”.

He also stressed Georgia's support for Ukraine, noting the nation's participation in over 600 international initiatives backing Ukraine and the provision of “significant” humanitarian assistance.

Georgia stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We have sponsored, joined, and supported more than 600 resolutions, statements, joint statements, and other initiatives by major international organisations and institutions to support Ukraine. The Government of Georgia has also been providing substantial humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, both in the country and to those currently residing in Georgia”, Kobakhidze said.

The official further highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law and called for “stronger multilateralism and accountability”, noting the “pressing global need for a unified effort to maintain peace and security”.

He also reflected on his Government's role in promoting regional stability in the South Caucasus, particularly its support for peaceful resolution of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In his address, the PM also urged for “more efficient” global institutions, with the UN at the core, to uphold international law, protect human rights, and secure sustainable development.

He told officials “only by upholding international principles can we fulfil our promise to maintain peace and pave the way for a just and prosperous world”.
