The Belgian company Jan De Nul NV has signed the agreement to build the marine infrastructure of the Anaklia deepwater port project in Georgia’s north-western Black Sea town, the Ministry of Economy said on Friday.

Zurab Sitchinava, the Director General of Anaklia Sea Port, the state company responsible for the design and construction of the port's marine infrastructure, and Tim Devolder, the Head of the Georgian office of Jan De Nul NV, signed the document.

Sitchinava said the company was set to commence the construction works outlined in the contract “in the near future”.

The Ministry said the port was a “strategically important” project for Georgia, with the potential to enhance the country's port infrastructure and “overall competitiveness”.

Guram Guramishvili, the Deputy Economy Minister, emphasised the importance of involving a company with “extensive experience” and a “strong international reputation” in the marine construction works.
