Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said the United National Movement opposition party “must be tried for a number of crimes”, including their actions in the context of the 2008 war with Russia.
Kobakhidze’s comments came after an announcement of intentions by the ruling Georgian Dream party to start a “public legal process” for alleged “treason” on behalf of the former UNM Government during the war.
The PM claimed UNM had been “preparing the groundwork step by step for the crimes of the August war since 2005”, adding “in the end, 20 percent of the country's territories were occupied [by Russia]”.
The head of the Government added the UNM Government had adopted a law on peaceful settlement of the conflict, created a “temporary administration” of the Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region where the conflict was mostly fought in, and “chosen the President for the region”.
The PM also claimed “military-type confrontations” and “other types of provocations” had “served the sole purpose of escalating the war”, which he called the “gravest crime committed by this political force against our country and people”.
