Beka Davituliani, an MP for the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday commented on the United States’ suspension of $95 million in financial support for the Georgian Government in reaction to the latter’s adoption of a controversial law on transparency of foreign influence by saying “much more” would happen in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in Georgia in October.
Davituliani claimed the financial aid had been suspended in order to “create a sense of tension” before the elections but added the sides would “start a new conversation” following the conclusion of the election “with the result the ruling party anticipates”.
He also alleged “many international actors” had “announced that they will do everything before the October elections to [aid] the [domestic] opposition”, adding the response to the adoption of the law was “nothing but punishment” for the Government “not playing the role of a slave over the recent months”.
The MP also claimed “everything is being prepared to create revolutionary feelings” in the public and added the state would “respond in a constitutional way” to the alleged process.
