Cultural Heritage Agency: sixth restoration phase of Ujarma Fortress in eastern Georgia completes

The National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia on Friday said it had completed the sixth phase of conservation and restoration works of Ujarma Fortress, a mediaeval fortress-town, in the country’s eastern Kakheti region.

The Agency said damaged fences connecting fifth, sixth and seventh parts of the castle were restored as part of the renovations, which started last year, as well as the seventh tower underwent conservation works.  

The body noted ₾1.91 million ($675,844) had been spent on the restoration efforts of the historic town.

It added the restoration efforts had begun in 2018, with the works involving clearing various parts of the citadel from send and trees, restoration of walls and a citadel of northern curtain wall, designing stairs connecting the citadel and the lower castle, arrangement of lighting system, building of walkways, a metal footbridge and two metal stairs.

Ujarma Castle, located on a very difficult terrain, covers 30,000 square metre and consists of two main parts, the citadel with kings palace, the church of the Holy Cross, cellar and reservoir and the lower castle overlooking the Iori River and is enclosed with a square fence till the bank of the river.
