Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday highlighted the Chinese Government’s “firm” recognition of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as its “official position”.

Kobakhidze was asked why China had not supported the United Nations resolution on Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions of Georgia, adopted on Tuesday, and said the resolution did “not deal with the recognition of sovereignty and occupied territories”.

China's official position is that China recognises Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity”, he said.

The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution within its 78th session, expressing concern over forced demographic changes resulting from the conflicts in Georgia and the humanitarian situation caused by the armed conflict between the country and Russia in August 2008, which it said had resulted in further forced displacement of civilians.
