Georgian Parliament overrides President's veto on annulment of gender quotas in electoral lists

The Georgian Parliament on Wednesday overcame a veto placed by the country’s President Salome Zourabichvili on an initiative by the Girchi party to annul gender quotas in formation of electoral lists.
The development comes after the legislative body last month approved amendments to regulations on gender quotas and submission of party lists that stipulated parties would no longer be required to draw up their lists based on the gender quota requirements.
The changes also reduce the minimum number of candidates for MPs from 60 to 30.

The Georgian Parliament on Thursday approved with its third reading an initiative by the Girchi party on the annulment of gender quotas in the process of forming electoral lists.
Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani on Tuesday applied to the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights for an opinion on the Georgian Parliament’s decision to annul gender quotas in the process of forming electoral lists.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said he had signed into law amendments to the Election Code regulations concerning elections of members and the Chair of the Central Election Administration.
The Georgian Central Election Commission on Thursday said it welcomed the involvement of international observer organisations in the general elections set for October in the country.
