EU Ambassador says bloc wants Georgia to join EU with its “unique culture, traditions”

Paweł Herczyński, the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, on Thursday said the bloc wanted Georgia with its “unique culture and traditions” to become a part of “our European Union family”.
In his video message over Europe Day, Herczyński noted Georgia was celebrating the date as a candidate country for the first time.
“This is a truly historic occasion in our shared European story. The goal is for Georgia to become a full member of the European Union with all privileges and all responsibilities of membership. For this, Georgia needs to demonstrate strong commitment to EU values and deliver necessary reforms”, Herczyński said.
The diplomat added the EU would decide whether Georgia would take the next step towards membership later this year.
“This opportunity exists right now. Do not miss it. The doors of our union have been finally wide open! We are waiting for you! We want Georgia with its unique culture and traditions, to become part of our European Union family. Stay on the EU path! And rest assured we are by your side on this journey”, he continued.
Herczyński further called for bringing Georgia closer to European Union membership.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Johan Forssell, the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, on Tuesday discussed the close friendly ties and growing trade and economic cooperation between Georgia and Sweden, and the need to further deepen business relations for the full utilisation of the existing potential.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Johan Forssell, the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, on Tuesday discussed the bilateral relations and tangible results in politics, trade, economy and defence, as well as security, education and culture.
Tamar Taliashvili, Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, on Tuesday said the CoE and its 46 member states had confirmed their “firm and unconditional” support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Wednesday said the Western Balkans, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia had a “historic window of opportunity” to “strongly bind their future” to the EU.
