Blackmailing does not work on the Georgian people and Government, as the country is independent and sovereign, and the people have dignity, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Wednesday at a press briefing in the Government Administration.
Kobakhidze’s comment came in response to a journalist’s question regarding the possibility of imposing sanctions against the leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party by the European Union and the United States in case of the adoption of the controversial domestic bill on transparency.
There have been several actions of blackmail with the attempts of a revolution in Georgia since 2020, the Head of the Government also noted.
The Georgian Parliament earlier today approved the second reading of the bill on the transparency of foreign influence, which calls for the registration of non-commercial legal entities and media outlets in the country as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power” if they derive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad and has sparked public protests and criticism by some of the country’s foreign partners.
