Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday highlighted decisions at the European Union were made by the European Commission and the European Council, in comments that downplayed the importance of resolutions of the European Parliament over the recent years.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze called resolutions of the European Parliament “waste papers”, and claimed the domestic opposition had “failed to use these papers to organise a revolution” in the country.

In 2022, after we had applied for [EU membership] candidate status, preparation of a revolutionary boost began, inside and outside the country, in a coordinated manner, and one of the main tools used to mature this [revolutionary] mood was the resolutions of the European Parliament. Then three different resolutions were adopted, absolutely unfair resolutions, where they demanded the release of criminals, punishment of Bidzina Ivanishvili, and this had the only purpose”, he said.

“Representatives of the European executive bodies tell us that we should not pay attention to the European Parliament and European parliamentarians, and the only ones who make decisions in the European Union are the European Commission and the European Council. I myself have directly heard this message at the highest level meetings, that we should not pay attention to the European Parliament, MEPs, resolutions of the MEPs”, he claimed.

The PM further alleged opponents were now “trying to link” the topic of opening EU accession talks with the country to “the revolutionary scenario”.

“Certain people do not want to have the accession talks opened until a little before the election, or a little after - they want to use it to cause excitement, to organise a revolution”, Kobakhidze said in reference to the parliamentary elections scheduled for October.

He further said the alleged scenario was “doomed to fail”, and told the channel resolutions of the European Parliament had “no value”.
