The past year saw “processes directed against stability” of Georgia and “sharply increased threats” against its security, an annual report of the State Security Service to the Parliament said on Monday.
The Service said it had “continuously monitored the operational situation” in the territory of the country throughout 2023, taking into account the increased threats “on the backdrop of the situation created in the Black Sea region”.
It added “areas of interest and aspirations of foreign special services” had been revealed by domestic state services, leading to taking of counterintelligence measures to “detect and prevent threats”.
The report also said “various actors tried to prepare the ground and mobilise resources for the aggravation of the political situation” in Georgia and effect a “violent change” of the Government.
The Service said it worked in coordination with other state agencies to implement “all necessary” preventive measures against the alleged cases.
It added “disinformation campaigns directed against Georgia” by “individual countries and their special services” had targeted the country's “foreign policy course” and integration into the Euro-Atlantic space, noting the threat represented a “significant challenge” for state security.
