The Georgian Environmental Protection Ministry’s Department of Environmental Supervision has issued 4,567 fines for violations of emissions regulations after inspecting vehicles in the largest cities of the country between September and April.
The body said on Wednesday its professionals had inspected the vehicles in capital Tbilisi, the central-eastern city of Rustavi, and Kutaisi and Batumi in the west.
It also said most of the fines - 2,107 - were issued in the capital, with 977 fines handed out in Kutaisi, 812 in Batumi and 672 in Rustavi.
It added 2,767 of the fines had been issued to personal vehicle drivers, 1,575 for minibus drivers, 225 for truck drivers and one for a bus driver.
Individuals violating the norms are penalised between ₾100-600 ($37-223), while legal entities are fined from ₾500-3000 ($186-1,119).
