The National Bank of Georgia on Tuesday issued a warning to customers regarding new fraudulent schemes involving online software, calling on the public to verify authenticity of companies before making transactions.
The body said legitimate apps like AnyDesk were used by scammers to gain access to personal and financial data on users’ smartphones when customers downloaded them after being shown ads promoting cashback or profit-generating opportunities.
Once installed, the scammers can gain control of customers’ mobile banking systems and electronic devices, putting their sensitive information at risk”, the Bank said.
The NBG has reported several instances where fraudsters had been able to activate loans and transfer funds to various accounts.
It added it was operating a hotline on the number +995 032 2406406 to answer questions around the topic.
