Georgian Orthodox Church Patriarch congratulates national football team on reaching first-ever European Championship

Ilia II, the Catholicos Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church, on Wednesday congratulated the country’s national football team on reaching the first-ever European Championship after their defeat of Greece in a penalty shoot-out in the final qualifier match for Euro 2024 in Tbilisi.

We congratulate the national football team of Georgia, their coaches, all of Georgia and our compatriots abroad for yesterday's victory”, His Holiness noted in his congratulatory message and highlighted Georgia’s recent “great successes” in other sports as well.

The Patriarch blessed football players and wished them to “continue making the country happy with further victories”.

Georgia’s national football team claimed the historic victory over Greece in the playoff final of the UEFA Euro 2024 and secured its first-ever spot in the major football tournament.
