The European Union is the only way to develop Georgia and preserve its identity, Beka Davituliani, an MP of the ruling party said on Tuesday at the Parliament's plenary session.

Davituliani said “many mistakes” had been made by Georgia in relations with the EU and vice versa, citing the  European states leaving Georgia alone in face of Soviet troops in 1921 and during  the Russia-Georgia 2008 conflict.

He also pointed to the bloc's " unfair" decision in June by not granting Georgia its membership candidate status.

“Even now, it is unfair when some European politicians equate Mikheil Saakashvili's [former Georgian imprisoned President] unjustified release with the European perspective, but this does not mean that we have any other alternative”, Davituliani emphasised.

It is important to listen to our citizens when considering the bill on transparency of foreign influence, Davituliani said, noting the set of words have “misled” the EU and the country's “thousands of honest” citizens because its connotation was “perceived negatively”.

"Thus, when the content will be discussed, it is essential to offer content acceptable both to the bloc and our people '', Davituliani added.
