The current situation in the South Caucasus region, the ongoing war in Ukraine, matters of Black Sea security and the situation in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.
In a meeting held in New York, Zourabichvili stressed Russia “must recognise that it cannot occupy the territories of other countries”, adding “today the international community has seen Russia's aggressive face better than it did during the 2008 war in Georgia”, the Presidential Administration said.

“Today, more than ever, peace and de-occupation have no alternative”, the Georgian President added.
The meeting also focused on the situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), highlighting the importance of increasing the effectiveness of the Geneva International Discussions format related to the conflicts.
The two officials also reviewed wider regional security matters, with Guterres thanking Zourabichvili for her “active” cooperation and noting her country’s participation in various UN formats was reflected in its “future-oriented” attitude.
