Sweden claims Ski Cross mixed team gold at Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships in Bakuriani

In the Ski Cross mixed team contest of the Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships, hosted in Georgia’s winter resort town of Bakuriani, on Sunday Sweden’s team became the champion.

In the team contest Canada’s team won a silver medal, while Italy claimed the bronze, the Georgian Ski Federation said.

Swedish Sandra Naeslund claimed the top honour in the women’s section of Ski Cross, where a silver medal went to Austria’s Katrin Ofner and the bronze to Fanny Smith from Switzerland.

Among men, Simone Deromedis, an Italian athlete, claimed a gold medal, while Florian Wilmsmann from Germany earned a silver medal and Swedish Erik Mobaerg finished third. Georgian athlete Davit Tediashvili also competed in the final, but unfortunately, could not cover the distance.

The World Championships will host the following events till February 28:

  • February 26 - Dual Moguls Finals, Ski and Snowboard Halfpipe Training, Freeski and Snowboard Slopestyle Qualification
  • February 27 - Ski and Snowboard Halfpipe Training, Snowboard Slopestyle Finals 
  • February 28 - Ski and Snowboard Halfpipe Training, Freeski Slopestyle Finals, Snowboard Cross Test

Ski cross and snowboard cross competitions will be run on Didveli, before the competition closes on March 5.

Georgian authorities ensured infrastructure for the event by installing three new cable cars, a 29-kilometre-long artificial snowmaking system and two artificial water reservoirs in the area.

Athletes, teams and media are also hosted in the Championship Village set up in the town, under a ₾270 million ($101 mln) expenditure by the Georgian Government.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation congress granted Georgia the hosting rights for the World Championships in 2018, with the tournament organised with the support of the Georgian Government, the country’s Mountain Trails Agency and the Ski Federation.
