Georgian dancer Giorgi Potskhishvili had been promoted to the rank of principal dancer by Ted Brandsen, the Director of the Dutch National Ballet, the company announced on Tuesday.
Potskhishvili’s advancement followed his “exceptional” year that saw his promotion to soloist last April and his September award of the Alexandra Radius Prize, presented annually to the dancer of Dutch National Ballet who has remarkably distinguished themselves in the previous dance season. The prize was presented to him by Alexandra Radius herself.
Giorgi is a phenomenal dancer with a talent seldom seen. He has a charismatic stage personality with incredible jumps, fantastic technique and a natural feeling for partnering. A unique artist, who already at such a young age can clearly inspire a large audience”, Brandsen said.
The performer also received an international nomination in the category Dancer of the Year from the leading magazine Dance Europe and won the Zwaan award.
The latter prize acknowledges outstanding achievements by companies, choreographers and dancers by the Dutch Association of Theatre and Concert Hall Directors.
Olivier Patey, the master of the Royal Ballet of Flanders and artistic director of Mossa Ballet School in Liège, has been conducting classical ballet master classes throughout the week at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre during his visit to Georgia.
The troupe of the Taras Shevchenko National Opera of Ukraine were hosted at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre on Saturday during day three of this year’s Tbilisi Ballet Festival, in a show dedicated to Ukraine and involving international ballet talents Marcelo Gomes and Alejandro Martinez.
Alessandra Ferri and Marcelo Gomes, two stars of world ballet, will be joined by the troupe of the Taras Shevchenko National Opera of Ukraine in an evening dedicated to the country at this year's Tbilisi Ballet Festival.
A three-show bill will mark the latest premiere of Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet in the capital next week, with founder and artistic director Mariam Aleksidze bringing to the stage of the city's Royal District Theatre the first instalment in the Bach Project series of the troupe.
