Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday claimed there was“high likelihood” of President Salome Zourabichvili stepping down “one to two months prior” to the parliamentary elections next year in a bid to “back” the “radical wing” of the domestic opposition in the race.

In his press comments, the lawmaker claimed “present circumstances suggest this course of action”, and said Zourabichvili enjoyed a “low approval rating” in the public.

In his previous comments, Kobakhidze had said Zourabichvili could make an alliance with the For Georgia opposition party founded by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and former Public Defender Nino Lomjaria.

He also accused the President of cooperation with the United National Movement opposition party.
