Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday said the country’s deoligarchisation reform - aimed to meet one of the conditions outlined by the European Commission last year for granting Georgia the European Union candidate status - was “voluminous and detailed”.
Papuashvili called the effort on the condition “very serious work”, and added the Government was “ready to move on” to its implementation.
The project related to deoligarchisation was developed in cooperation and exchange with various agencies, including the European Commission. Tomorrow we will also have a discussion of this issue with the non-governmental sector. [...] It is quite voluminous, detailed, and I would say that it is very serious work”, he said.
The chief Georgian legislator stressed it was “important” that the Government approved the plan “soon”.
Papuashvili also commented on the ongoing discussions on the current five percent election threshold for domestic elections - ahead of the 2024 parliamentary vote - on the backdrop of opposition groups requesting its lowering to two percent, and said “most EU countries” were using the same standard.
