The European Commission’s “historic decision” recommending the European Council to grant Georgia its membership candidate status next month was discussed on Wednesday by Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Oliver Varhelyi, the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement in Brussels.

At the meeting, after the Commission made public its recommendation for the status to be granted to the country, Darchiashvili highlighted the Commission's support for Georgia on the path of European integration, especially in fulfilling the 12 priorities outlined by the bloc for granting the candidate status.

The parties expressed their readiness to cooperate closely in the future to implement the EU recommendations, with Georgian FM affirming the Government’s willingness to continue its efforts to “take another decisive step” on the way of joining the bloc and officially becoming a candidate country in December, the Foreign Ministry said.
Darchiashvili thanked Varhelyi and the Commission for the positive report on Georgia’s progress and called the decision “a turning point” for the country’s integration into the EU.
