The Georgian Parliament has approved amendments to the law on Citizenship that further simplify procedures for obtaining it for stateless individuals who have spent time in residence in the country.

The legislative body on Wednesday said the changes would mean stateless individuals who had spent at least five years in the country would qualify for citizenship in case of meeting other requirements.

The body said the Public Service Development Agency would test individuals applying to receive the nationality in proficiency in the Georgian language, and understanding of basics of the history of Georgia and fundamentals of the country’s legislation.

The Parliament approved the changes after the third and final reading of the bill unanimously, with 84 votes, earlier today.
