Georgia is one of 20 countries with a Global Hunger Index score of less than five, the 2023 edition of the annual report jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe shows.
The Index, designed to track hunger at global, regional, and country levels, sees Georgia ranked among 125 states ”with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores”, the report notes, adding the sub-five ranking leads to the country having a “low” level of hunger.

The 20 countries with a GHI of less than five also includes Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary and Turkey.
The scores are calculated based on a combination of undernourishment, the share of children with chronic undernutrition, the share of children with acute undernutrition and child mortality.
Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Wednesday said the Government was able “not only to maintain economic stability but also to ensure double-digit growth” for two years in a row “despite challenges”.
The Administration of the Government of Georgia on Monday said the economic data of 2022 had shown the poverty rate in the country was at a “historic low” of 15.6 percent.
About 19.5 per cent of Georgia’s population is under the absolute poverty line, shows the latest data of 2019 poverty indicators published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat). The share of the population under the absolute poverty line decreased by 0.6 per cent in 2019 compared to 2018.
Georgia has ranked 39th among 177 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) with a score of 9.2, which means that the country suffers from a level of hunger that is low.
